Got Hot Water?®

ACT D’MAND® Electronic Kontrols Pumping Systems

Since 1992, ACT Inc. has manufactured electronically controlled pumping systems for the residential and commercial building industries.

Proudly Made in the USA with Global Components

Proven Efficiency & Reliability

In 1992, D’MAND® Pumping Systems were first written into California Energy Codes as an energy credit for new residential construction. Since then, numerous independent studies have verified their substantial water and energy savings from a consumer perspective. These evaluations include extensive research conducted by:

  • California Energy Commission
  • Davis Energy Group
  • Oak Ridge National Laboratories
  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBL)
  • National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center
  • Masco EFL / Build America
  • Aquacraft Inc.

D’MAND® Pumping Systems deliver 100% convenience and reliable, long-term performance. In fact, consumers consistently report that systems installed over 14 years ago are still operating flawlessly today.

Advanced SMART SENSOR Technology

While traditional push-button activation (both hardwired and wireless) remains popular, ACT, Inc. has engineered high-efficiency motion sensors to automate your system. These sensors can be hardwired or paired with wireless remotes, and mount directly to the wall or inside a standard switch plate.

Our proprietary Smart Sensor electronics utilizes an advanced Passive Infrared (PIR) configuration that performs several sophisticated tasks:

  • Anti-Cycling Lockout Mode: When motion is detected, the sensor transmits a single activation signal and immediately enters a multi-minute “Lockout” mode. This prevents continuous movement from repeatedly triggering the pump.
  • Smart Filter Dynamics: The sensor evaluates an object’s weight, size, and heat signature simultaneously. It is calibrated so that children under 4 feet tall or 60 pounds, as well as pets of any size, will not trigger activation.
  • Adult-Only Activation: By cross-referencing heat, mass, and motion from live objects, the sensor ensures the hot water demand system is only activated by adults.
  • Premium Engineering: To achieve this level of precision, we source high-end internal electronic PIR components and design custom, durable protective casings to house them. We then integrate our signature Bluetooth® communication system for seamless, wireless PIR activation.

Combined with our proprietary Delta-T electronic shut-off controls, the system automatically deactivates the pump the moment it senses a rise in ambient water temperature. This guarantees the homeowner never experiences excessive or wasteful pump run-times.

The Evolution of Structured Plumbing®

Built upon the decades-long success of our pumping infrastructure, a new standard called Structured Plumbing® was introduced. A properly configured Structured Plumbing® layout includes:

  1. A strategically located main trunk line (typically featuring a dedicated return line).
  2. Low-volume supply lines routing directly to individual fixtures.
  3. Complete pipe insulation on all hot water lines.
  4. A D’MAND® Pumping System to prime the main circulation loop immediately prior to a hot water draw.

This layout maximizes efficiency by drawing extensively on research from the Energy Commission. ACT, Inc. regularly shares these Structured Plumbing® implementation guidelines with builders and plumbing contractors nationwide to ensure flawless field installations.

Unmatched Environmental & Financial Savings

Installing a D’MAND® System yields immediate, measurable benefits for the average household:

  • Water Savings: Conserves between 7,200 and 12,000 gallons of water annually per home by eliminating the wait time at the tap.
  • Energy Savings: Saves between 1,500 and 2,400 kWh of electricity per home per year.
  • Operational Cost: Costs less than one dollar ($1.00) per year to run.
  • Longevity: Engineered with an expected operational life of 20 years.

A recent report issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Energy Star for Homes program, titled “Estimating Potential Hot Water Savings from D’MAND® Controlled Pumping Systems and Structured Plumbing® Layouts,” highlights these impressive dynamics:

  • Demonstrates an energy factor enhancement coefficient between 27% and 41% for gas water heaters, driven by a 30% reduction in overall water consumption.
  • Validates substantial, repeatable hot water savings across trunk-and-branch layouts, new construction, retrofits, and instances where standard, continuously running circulation pumps are replaced.
